Pedro de Valdivia founder of Santiago granted in 1546 lots of land that used to be wild land the then suburbs of the city to the church… The Sisters of the Holy Providence were part of our great grandparents that came to Chile back in 1853, as a result of the divine intervention of the Holy Providence… Three sisters, two nuns and their confessor were traveling from Canada to Oregon but there was a big flood in Oregon and unable to go back to Canada, they stumbled into a Chilean sailor, and ended up down at the end of the world… The president in that time Mr Manuel Montt and his minister Mr Antonio Varas immediately decided to provide shelter and requested that they should develop their Christian work in this country, and this how this part of the city got its name "`Providencia"
