The old town of Rethymnon , apart from the 20km golden sandy beach and sunny weather and all kinds of water sports, trekking activities etc , has also a rich past. It's architecture reflects this , combing the oriental features of the Turkish period with Renaissance-style Venetian ones. You may visit Turkish Minarets , the Venezian Fortress , the Ordodox churches, all coexisting and all forming the particular Rethymnon atmosphere. Just take a walk around the Fortezza during the sunset and you will realize the depth and the variety of its' past. As centrally positioned on the island of Crete, it makes the perfect base for day trips to the most attractive beaches , Gorges, lakes or museums and archeological sites, such as Samaria Gorge, Lake Kournas, Preveli beach, Knossos, Falasarna, Elafonisi e.t.c. By rending a car ,a scooter , bike or just taking a bus you could reach in an hour or two almost all destinations of Crete. You just have to choose what landscape and what historical period fascinates you most.
