The Residence overlooks one of the most beautiful city beaches of Sicily, wide opened on the enchanting Gulf. A sculpture of Venus seems to rise up from the water, and dominates the magnificent square in front of the Residence, from where starts a superb boardwalk along the ancient walls, which leads to the old city. Trapani preserves the memory of the succession of the many cultures attracted over the centuries by the successful location and the splendor of this land. Founded by the ancient people of the Elimi, Trapani was long inhabited by the Phoenicians, who made a flourishing colony. After the Roman domination, in the IX century AD came the Arabs, and later the Normans, to enter into a period of great splendor that went on under the influence of the Aragoneses and Bourbons, until the unification made by Garibaldi in 1860. The streets of the old town, designed to go along the trajectories of the wind, show to the visitor an interminable succession of churches, buildings and monuments, a gorgeous mix of artistic styles, historical ages, legends lost in the mists of time. As the Cavarretta Palace, now city council, dating from the fifteenth century and later adorned with a magnificent baroque facade, or the XIV century Cathedral of St. Augustine, built by the Knights Templar, with its marvellous rose window engraved with the symbols of the three great religions monotheistic, Christian, Islamic and Jewish, just opposite the statue of Neptune, the mythical founder of the ancient 'Drepanon”.
