Blue Monkey Beach Cottages
Several handmade cottages are dispersed in a wild garden along Wasini's coast line. Special care has been taken to leave the environment as untouched as possible and the bush stretches right into the rocky compound situated beyond the outskirts of the main village.
The owners' love for nature clearly shows in the eco-conscious construction of the cottages. Mainly local material from the island has been used; rough stones and shells make up the walls and the mangrove roof constructions are covered with palm shingles.A solar installation caters for all energy needs. Since there is no ground water on the island and its inhabitants have to entirely rely on rainwater collected in communal cisterns, the cottages are equipped with water saving bucket showers. Waste water is used for plants and solid waste material is composted.
You should not be surprised to encounter Blue monkeys, monitor lizards, chameleons, duikers, cats, birds, and a donkey named Habib.
Each cottage has sea view, a 2 x 2 m (6' x 6') double bed, an additional single bed (incl. mosquito nets), a sitting/writing area, a shower/toilet, and a large roofed terrace including cooking area for self-caterers (fireplace & charcoal cooker).
Egrets and storks feeding in the intertidal zone can be watched from the comfort of chairs set in the shade of a baobab tree, and with a bit of good luck a school of resident Humpback dolphins can be spotted playing around with their befriended bottlenose dolphins.

Wasini island is Lamu's little sister; no cars, no roads. Life is mainly influenced by Swahili culture, its arid flora, the indigenous fauna, and the surrounding sea including the magnificent Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park. Our laid-back home has plenty to offer to the traveler who seeks a peaceful nature sanctuary to refresh soul and mind. The hassle of Kenya's busy beaches seems a 1000 miles away. Unpleasant companions like flycatchers and pickpockets are left behind on the mainland.

Things To Note
Although Wasini’s inhabitants are used for many years to a daily influx of tourists who are on a short stop-over on the island during their day trip including Kisite Mpunguti National Marine Park, every single visitor is still cherished and warmly welcomed. But only the traveler who spends more than just a few hours on the island will fully appreciate its treasures. No cars, no roads, but a lot of wild nature and traditional Swahili culture. The clock seems to tick in a different rhythm here.
