In 1601 the old city walls were razed to the ground in connection with the expansion of the city. The Sint Anthonispoort was spared, but lost its function. On either side, part of the canals were filled in, creating a square: the current Nieuwmarkt. In 1617 the former city gate was given the function of a weighing place. (or toll bridge). The building is popularly known as De Waag. Nowadays it accommodates a large cafe-restaurant as well as a centre for new media.

Located Near

The old centre of Amsterdam, with its 8,000 listed buildings, is by far the largest historical city centre in the Netherlands. Of these monuments the Dam Palace, the Central Station and De Waag on the Nieuwmarkt are the most important. Inn Old Amsterdam, B&B is located right opposite De Waag, formerly De Sint Anthonispoort. This gate was built in 1488 and was one of the three main gates of Amsterdam.
